Why local history?

Paper 159

Lecture – 1990

Author – Grimes, Brendan

All history begins from local history, the author asserts in this excellent overview of why historical research is important. For the researcher, such work brings one in contact with people and places one would not normally meet. The author illustrates this with an account of an afternoon he spent with the then 91 year old celebrated essayist Hubert Butler who has since died. Historical research, Brendan Grimes thinks, is of value when primary sources are studied. Secondary sources are only useful to inform one of the subject being studied.
