The Skerries Barkyard revisited

Paper 209

Lecture – 1998

Author – Ni Mhurchadha, Maighread

The history of the barking industry in Skerries is studied in the context of the growth of the town from the early 17th century, the development of its harbour and associated industries – including the smuggling trade. The Minutes of the Irish Revenue Commissions charged with controlling the latter are used to trace the history of this fascinating industry.
