Paper 294
Lecture – 2013
Author – Ryan, David
Published in: Time & Tide Vol 9
An entertaining and informed account of the adventurous early aviators, both Irish and international. It concentrates on the exploits of one Harry Hawker. An Australian by birth, he left his native country in 1911 and had an eventful flying career in Ireland and the UK before and after WW1. The hair-raising adventures of Harry Hawker and other pioneers, contrasts greatly with the regulated, safe environment of today’s pilots. The author, with his Skerries and aviation background, obviously enjoyed writing this paper.
