In 1952 Joe Shiels presented four papers on the fishing industry in Skerries to the Old Skerries Society. His work (which goes into great detail) was mostly based on the report of the Royal Commission set up in 1835 to ‘inquire into the state of the Irish Fisheries, the laws affecting the means and expediency of extending and improving them’. The author uses Sheils’s papers as a secondary source on which to represent the material with a new historical interpretation.
