The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which now has over 220 lifeboat stations placed around the coasts of Ireland and the U.K., was founded in 1824. The R.N.L.I. established a lifeboat in Skerries in 1854, although there had been a lifeboat there prior to this, established by the forerunner of the R.N.L.I. This paper is valuable for its comprehensive account of the various rescues on the seas off Skerries and the brave men who risked their lives in the service of others. Kalanne O’Leary, a native of Skerries, has the distinction of being the first woman ever to become a crew member of an R.N.L.I. lifeboat.
